From Tradition to Candy Innovation.

Every October 31, children dress up, knock on doors and return home with bags full of candy. But have you ever wondered why we give out candy on Halloween in the first place?

Candy wasn’t always the go-to Halloween treat. What began with customs involving food and small gifts gradually evolved into the trick-or-treating tradition we know today. Let’s unwrap the story behind Halloween’s sweetest tradition.

From ancient traditions to modern celebrations

Halloween has a complex history, influenced by European traditions such as the Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the transition from harvest to winter. Later customs included souling, where people received food in exchange for prayers for the dead, and guising, where people dressed in costumes and visited homes in exchange for treats.

Food and sweets also became part of different cultural traditions. In Ireland, barmbrack, a traditional fruit loaf, is associated with Halloween. Historically, objects hidden inside the loaf were believed to predict the future.

Around the same time of year, Mexico celebrates Día de los Muertos, a distinct tradition honouring deceased loved ones. Decorated sugar skulls, known as calaveras de azúcar, can be placed on altars as symbolic offerings. Although these celebrations have different histories and meanings, they demonstrate how food and sweets can become part of cultural traditions.

But how did the custom of sharing treats develop into the candy-filled Halloween we know today?

How did candy become the traditional Halloween treat?

As Halloween customs travelled across borders, celebrations continued to evolve. When trick-or-treating became increasingly popular in North America during the 1930s and 1940s, children received a variety of treats, including homemade cookies, apples, nuts and small gifts. Candy was only one of many possibilities.

The transformation accelerated during the 1950s, when candy manufacturers increasingly promoted individually wrapped sweets specifically for Halloween. Packaged candy offered a convenient alternative to homemade treats, making it easier for households to buy and distribute sweets to trick-or-treaters.

By the 1970s, individually wrapped candy had become the preferred choice for many American households. What began as a tradition of sharing different kinds of treats had developed into a celebration closely associated with commercially produced candy.

How big is the Halloween candy market today?

Halloween has developed into a significant sales period for the confectionery industry. During the eight-week Halloween season ending November 2, 2025, confectionery sales in tracked U.S. retail channels reached $7.7 billion, a 5.9% increase in dollar sales compared with the corresponding period in 2024. Much of this growth was driven by price increases.

Of that total, $1.4 billion came from Halloween-specific seasonal products. The $7.7 billion figure includes all confectionery sold during the period, not exclusively Halloween-themed candy.

For manufacturers, these figures illustrate the scale of seasonal demand. However, developing seasonal products requires careful consideration of production costs, capacity and the risk of unsold inventory.

From Halloween inspiration to candy innovation

Halloween offers manufacturers opportunities to experiment with seasonal shapes, flavours and textures. But turning a creative idea into a finished product requires the right production technology.

At Tanis, we’re crazy about candy production. We develop complete production lines for gums and jellies, including starch and non-starch solutions. At our Innovation Center in Oosterhout, manufacturers can develop recipes and test production processes with support from our food technologists and process engineers.

Halloween may last only one night, but confectionery innovation continues throughout the year.
